STEM Week in Design Technology at MGGS
With the average household producing over a ton of plastic waste every year, students in DT have been looking at how to reduce their negative environmental impact as part of STEM week. Developing their understanding of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, students in Year 9 were challenged to either weave, knit, crochet or fuse used plastics into new products. From placemats, to jewellery, to bags, the possibilities were practically endless.
Students in Year 11 took part in an AECOM structural engineering event with Tom Gordon, a
local engineer. Tom discussed a range of engineering principles and experiences such as how engineers are helping to design new spaces both physically and remotely (see the virtual consultation room as pictured). He also demonstrated how to make a Da Vinci bridge and discussed the impact of changing different factors or materials on the strength and stability of the bridge. Students experimented with their own Da Vinci bridge designs at home using lollipop sticks, discovering that engineering employs a wide range of disciplines from science, technology, engineering and maths.
