‘The Merchant of Venice’ – English Globe Theatre Trip for Years 12 & 13
On 15th March A level English Literature students attended a trip to Shakespeare’s Globe. After arriving at the venue, we collected an obligatory Starbucks and headed into the theatre for the performance of ‘The Merchant of Venice.’ It was the most gorgeous candlelit room, with seats surrounding the stage and a live band.
The show was absolutely amazing! There was a mix of very funny moments and intense, dramatic, emotive moments, where the silence was palpable and all attention was on the actors (the man playing Shylock was especially captivating). The play, despite being performed in Early Modern English was modernised in some places, especially scenes involving Portia, who’s attempts at finding a suitable husband were likened to a dating or game show which made for very entertaining viewing.
Thank you very much to Miss Calvert and Miss Buchanan for organising the visit.
