She made us feel like anyone could write so it was really inspiring!
Student – 8F
Some of our year 8 students enjoyed a visit from Jennifer Somervell, a children’s author from New Zealand. Mrs Somervell visited MGGS whilst she was touring Europe and she spoke to the students about the creative writing process, publishing and her inspiration for the books she has written. The students thoroughly enjoyed reading her work, which they found humorous and listened intently as she read one of her novels to them.
The girls asked a lot of questions and were given good advice on creative writing, in particular picture books for children. One student in 8F commented, “She made us feel like anyone could write, it was really inspiring!” She has very kindly left us a copy of each of her books in the Library, for any budding picture book writers to peruse!
As well as talking to the girls, Mrs Somervell also enjoyed a tour of the school and looking through some of the material from the School Archives. This was especially important to Mrs Somervell as her mother taught here between 1951 and 1953, before emigrating to New Zealand to get married!
