Maidstone Grammar Schools to perform Handel’s Messiah in 1959

In April 1959, several choirs came together from Maidstone Grammar Schools to perform Handel’s Messiah.  They were accompanied by The Old Barn Orchestra (this orchestra is still in existence – now under the baton of Maestro Bryan Gipps) conducted by David Cutforth and led by Frederick Pryce. The soloists were Elma McFarlane, Lesley Reid and Lindsay Heather with Nancy White and Nigel Dodd on continuo.

Old Girl Janet Carr (nee Hindle, 1952-60) has sent Alex Meaders, in the Development Trust Office, a vinyl recording of the performance.  Were you there for the recording or know someone that was? Did you sing or play?  Maybe you were in the audience?  Do you recognise any of the names listed above?  Do let us know.  This is an amazing piece of history and we would love to find out more about the event itself. Please email me on ameaders@mggs.org to contact me directly.
