As we reach the end of a very unusual year in Food and Nutrition, it has been fantastic to see students making such progress with their practical work at home. So many students have gone above and beyond to showcase their creativity and flair in the kitchen. For the final practical of this academic year, Year 7 and 8 students were tasked to create a dish focused on ‘Food Styling’. Here are some of the fantastic submissions for this task.

Textiles students have managed their remote learning brilliantly since the school closed, with projects including fashion designing, t-shirt upcycling, finger knitting and computer-aided designs for printed textiles. We have been really impressed with the quality of the work being submitted to our Google Classrooms, but also by the students’ grit and determination to continue their learning successfully at home. A number of them have been busy making their own products, such as rainbow scarves, blankets and cuddly toys and others have worked hard to finish the garments that they didn’t get a chance to complete earlier this academic year. As the summer holidays draw near, we all feel truly inspired by the creativity of our MGGS Textiles students!

Thank_You_Year_10Well, what a year, not quite the one we had planned but we have made it to the end of term. You have continued to make me a very proud Head of Study, you have worked extremely hard during this tricky time and been so supportive of each other. You deserve a restful summer holiday to recharge the batteries ready for the year ahead. I thank you for being so lovely and for making my role as Head of Study an enjoyable, albeit sometimes challenging, job. Wishing you and your families a lovely summer holiday!

Well done Key Stage 3!

Well_done_Key_Stage_3!We want to say a massive well done to all of our Year Key Stage 3 students who have worked tirelessly over the lockdown on their homeschooling. Some of the work produced has been outstanding and they have really shown their creative sides through the art projects and house challenges. The students have exhibited the MGGS habits, in particular, a positive mindset and resilience and we were thrilled to be able to welcome them in for a face to face session this term. We have also had a number of key worker children who have been in school regularly – well done to them for being so positive and for working so well in school this term.

Thank you to all parents/carers for their ongoing support at home which has been invaluable to us at this time; we know that homeschooling may not have been easy so we are very grateful for all of your time and patience! It has been a shame not to have had our annual Key Stage 3 Celebration event but we have managed to award prizes and say thank you to the students virtually, and we wish all Year 9 students the very best of luck next year with their GCSEs in Key Stage 4.

The pastoral team has been working very hard too to ensure that our new Year 7s have been receiving regular contact prior to starting at MGGS in September. We would like to thank Neha and Norah in Year 8 for putting this video together for our new students to give them a glimpse of the school site in preparation for their new MGGS journey https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXzlAr_q0f8&t=5s. We are very much looking forward to welcoming all new students as they start their MGGS journey with us.

We wish all of our Key Stage 3 students and parents/carers a lovely summer and look forward to seeing you again in the new term.

Well done Year 12!

Well_done_Year_12It has been a very long term for Year 12, but it has been wonderful to see so many of you back in school. Term 6 is always a busy one, but our students’ work and commitment has been all the more impressive during these most unusual of times. Many have managed their work brilliantly alongside new student leadership responsibility, the launch of additional courses, and laying the foundations for UCAS and other post-18 applications. The nature of two year, synoptic courses requires that students keep up some work, revision and research for coursework during the summer of Year 12, but it is important that everyone takes a step back and enjoys a good period of rest, especially at the end of such a challenging year. Therefore, we would like to wish Year 12 a pleasant and safe summer break and we look forward to welcoming them into Year 13 next term.

Thank You and A bientôt Year 13

The whole staff were humbled and overwhelmed by a surprise gift from Year 13 this week; a video of thanks, compiled in secret and full of personal messages of gratitude to teaching and support staff and governors. View the video here https://youtu.be/8zEo7i5RhGo

Mrs Ransom shared this with staff on Tuesday with the following message:

This wonderful video dropped into my inbox on Sunday night and it is intended for viewing by each and every member of staff at MGGS. This was entirely coordinated by students without our knowledge and is testament to the wonderful young people we are fortunate to work with. Have the tissues handy! This is why we do what we do.

MGGS would like to say a big thank you to Year 13 for the time and effort invested in producing such a thoughtful tribute to our school. It has been a pleasure to work with this year group, and in the face of so many unexpected challenges this year, they have shown themselves to be the embodiment of ‘non sibi sed omnibus’. We are working hard on a proper “goodbye”, including Speech Day on 14th December 2020 (save the date, Year 13!), but for now, this is our “à bientôt”. Wishing you all a wonderful and safe summer.

In term 5 and 6, Year 8 students usually study Pop Art at MGGS and base their response on something which is going on in the world at the time. This year, it seems one thing is dominating our lives, so students have been using Pop Art as inspiration to create their own Gifs, showing their own responses to the current pandemic. There were some fantastic responses, here are just a few of the best ones… enjoy!

Headteacher’s End of Term Message

$

DSTAs we come to the end of this academic year I do want to publicly thank all the school’s staff who have worked in so many different and unusual ways this academic year to ensure the school has continued to operate (virtually) and students have been able to continue their education- although in a somewhat different way to what anyone of us could have anticipated at the start of the academic year. I do want to additionally thank each parent and/or carer who has worked with their daughter/son over this period of time. I know so many parents of students in Year 10 and 12 have gone out of their way to help ensure their daughter/son has attended school this term, thank you.

A special mention must go to our Keyworker students who have continued to come to school throughout this period. It has been good to see how well they have worked each day in the library and/or A212.

As we move to the end of this year we are saying goodbye to a few colleagues:

Mrs Bradshaw is retiring after two years at MGGS. We are grateful to her for staying on longer than originally anticipated to help through this time of virtual working.

Miss Booth is moving after six years at MGGS to her Alma mater of Gravesend Grammar School. We wish her every success within her new role within their DT department. We thank her for all her work here, especially within the Sixth Form Management Team.

Miss Relph is moving to a completely different environment, to Qatar. We trust she enjoys this adventure, as well as the climate. We thank her for the numerous different roles she has taken on during her time at MGGS. In particular, for bringing girls PE to the forefront of our school’s PE education and for gaining some notable successes with this during her time here. Miss Relph has over the years given a huge amount of support to students in a pastoral capacity and I know many students are personally very grateful to her, for her help. We wish her all the best for the future.

Mrs Binks is leaving MGGS after 14 years. Having originated from the north of England it has been a desire on her family’s part to relocate further north. We fully understand this, but will be very sad to see Mrs Binks leave. She started at MGGS as Head of Biology, rapidly then becoming Head of Science and in the last five years has been Assistant Headteacher for Key Stage 4, a vital role in supporting and guiding students through their GCSEs. From September, Mrs Binks will be teaching at Caistor Grammar School and we wish her and her family all the best in their relocation and new jobs.

I would remind you of the letters that have gone out this week outlining the plans for September. These will be followed with further guidance for students just before the start of term in September.

Finally, can I wish you all a restful, safe and healthy summer. We are looking forward to seeing all our students back at school in September, clearly in a changed environment, and I trust ready and prepared to start their academic studies again physically in school.

Have a wonderful summer Year 11!

Despite it not being the Term 6 that Year 11 expected, we have been busy working hard together to prepare everyone for the Sixth Form virtually, with lots of transition work, a virtual Induction Day, letters of welcome from Mrs Ransom, the Head Students and their new Head of Study, Ms Zoil, and much more. It has been great to get to know our offer holders, both students from MGGS and other local schools, albeit virtually, during this time.

As we all take a break for summer, we’d like to wish everyone a safe and pleasant break and every success for their GCSE results. We are very much looking forward to welcoming you into the Sixth Form and the next chapter of your education, and, as the Year 13 leavers will attest to, we’re sure you’ll make many happy memories here. For those of our own students who are planning to move on to new adventures, we wish you all the very best, and hope that you’ll stay in touch! Once MGGS, always MGGS!

Lucy T in Year 10 Competition Success @MGGS

Lucy_T_Competition_SuccessWe were delighted to learn that despite ‘lockdown’ MGGS’s Lucy T has prevailed. With athletic clubs closing at the end of March, Lucy was forced to continue her training at home by herself. This wasn’t easy but her coach kept in touch giving her weekly sessions to follow. Training involved a sprint workout on the green, and muscle development. Lucy became a regular out on the green sprinting and doing pull ups on tree branches by herself, she then went indoors to focus on her core exercises.

Track training was able to resume in small bubbles at the end of May and her coach was pleased with how fast she was, maintaining her performance through weeks of lockdown.

On Saturday 1st August Lucy was able to take part in her 1st competition under new Covid-19 regulations at Lee Valley in London. Lucy came an amazing 2nd with a new 100m PB – 12.94s.

Tuesday 11th August Lucy completed her 2nd competition in Worthing gaining 2nd with another new 100m PB – 12.60s and 1st with a new 200m PB – 26.10s.

Saturday 15th August Lucy did her 3rd competition in Lee Valley again and took 1st with a new 200m PB – 25.97s.

Lucy has a few more competitions coming up – including Worthing on Tuesday 1st and Chelmsford the following Saturday.

Lucy currently sits: 5th in the UK U15 – 100m, and 13th in the UK U15 – 200m. What a fantastic achievement, well done Lucy, we are very proud of you!

In A301 – removal and reinstallation of all equipment, relocation of Exams Office to T-Block, including new cabling, new file server setup and student data migrated across, preparation for the next batch of Chromebooks and Mr Bennett (new Senior Systems Technician) started (and kept coming back!).

The two main areas of focus in the school over the summer were school improvements & ensuring school is Covid-19 safe for the September return

Headteacher’s Update

DSTIt has been very good to welcome all students into school this week and to start to get back to ‘normal’ in terms of teaching and learning. Clearly we are working in new and different ways and both staff and students have been working to establish new routines and practices in our daily school lives. We will need to continually review and update our practices over the coming few weeks and months. This will naturally lead us to updating guidance as required.

We all need to continue to remember the requirements of each of us to socially distance. I would again reiterate that the wearing of face masks is a requirement at all times whilst on public transport.

As with any year, we cannot predict the future and the last academic year was certainly one that none of us could have even dreamt of. I trust that this year will be less eventful, but one in which each and everyone of our students makes excellent progress and appreciates the value of being in school.
