Maidstone Area Book Awards 2019

MGGS were delighted to take part in the Maidstone Area Book Awards (MABA) again this year.

Since November, a group of students has met in the Library, with Mrs Hill, our Learning Resources Co-ordinator, to read and discuss the six books chosen by the MABA School Librarians as ‘Future Classics’. Students enjoyed discovering new authors and genres that they wouldn’t usually pick to read. After collating the votes for their favourites, they joined the five other schools and their book groups on Tuesday 2nd April.

The event had a special guest this time; one of the authors our students had read! Sue Wallman has three published novels in the teen psychological thriller genre. Sue was a compelling and warm speaker as she spoke to over eighty students from the visiting local secondary schools. Sue answered many eager questions from students, ranging from questions about her story inspirations, to her writing tools, to her earnings per book sold! Many of the students took the opportunity to buy one of her novels and have her sign it too.

Then, by a complete coincidence, Sue Wallman had actually been voted as the overall winner for her novel; “Your Turn to Die”. She was surprised and delighted to accept the award! If students would like to borrow the book, we have two copies in the Library and we would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of spine-tingling thrillers.

The MGGS MABA group are already looking forward to next year when they will run the book group again. All students are welcome to join us in September!
