Fun and Games!_AMGGS

During the winter months, many students spend their lunchtimes relaxing in the Mary Smith Library at MGGS. Some like to read on our soft seating area and some groups of students have been making use of our games shelf!

We would really like to refresh and update the games we have, so if you have any board or card games you would like to donate to us, we would be very grateful! Many thanks.

On Tuesday 14th January, 120 Brunswick House Primary School students battled the wind and the rain to visit MGGS to watch the annual Sixth Form Extra Pantomime, ‘Peter Pan’. The Sixth Form cast and crew (joined by one Year 10 student) did a brilliant job of entertaining our young audience. It was fantastic to see and hear the students ‘booing’ and ‘cheering’ our characters, dancing with Smee and even high fiving the crocodile! We’re exceptionally proud of the talent and creativity of our students, and especially their willingness to share this with others. A great afternoon was had by all.

The Molly Tipples Sports Hall Extension Announcement

Earlier this week Miss Stanley informed parents and carers that last autumn the school gained outline planning permission to extend the Molly Tipple Sports Hall. The project will include some reconfiguring of current space within the Sports Hall as well as extending the building towards the netball/tennis courts.

This development will provide enhanced changing facilities for girls; a new dedicated changing room for sixth form boys, and a dance studio. It will also include a room that we can use to help facilitate the visits to our Second World War tunnels by local primary schools, with the option of making our tunnels available for other members of the local community to come and visit. We are also hoping to significantly upgrade our provision for our Music department as part of this project.

It is anticipated that this project will start summer 2020 and we hope to share more details directly with students and parents in the weeks and months ahead.

Upper School production of ‘The Crucible’ – 12th and 13th February

Upper_School_production_of _The_Crucible’

The Crucible by Arthur Miller (there will be a second production in July for KS3 students). With an intimate cast and crew of 30, Maidstone Grammar School for Girls will transport you to Salem, Massachusetts. It is the year 1692 and all is not well in this strict Puritan community. Witchcraft is suspected…

Based on real events Miller’s classic brings to life the famous Salem Witch Trials where a group of teenage girls start to accuse men and women of witchcraft. The efforts of the court to find out the truth are swayed by the hysteria that the girls create in the courtroom. The judge chooses to believe the girls’ stories, to save the reputation of the court, and this leads to tragic consequences. The Crucible is the GCSE Drama set text so it does deal with some dark themes/subject content; therefore, we would recommend that this show is suitable for Year 10 students upwards.

The production will be performed by students from Years 10 to 12 and will take place on Wednesday, 12th February and Thursday, 13th February in the Main School Hall, starting at 7pm. The PFA will also kindly be selling refreshments on both evenings. Those students involved have been working extremely hard and hope that you will be able to join them on one of the evenings.

A letter about tickets was sent out via ParentMail earlier this week. Tickets are £6 per adult and £4 for concessions. As we are staging the piece in the round seating is limited so we will not be selling tickets ‘on the door’ so order your tickets today!

First Place Champions Crowned Top Dancing School in UK!

$

0

Following their success at the regional heat in November, some of our MGGS girls who dance at Hilton Hall Dance Academy (HHDA) attended the Semi Final and Grand Final of the VAD Dance Inspirations competition in Blackpool last weekend. During the past 12 months, over 2000 acts entered the competition from across the UK and Ireland. This culminated in 50 Grand Final acts comprising of solos, duets, trios and group dances across all dance genres from ballet through to musical theatre and hip hop.

Of these 50 Grand Final acts, the HHDA girls (a team of only 15) gained 10 places (eight of which included our girls from MGGS). The team took two group ballet dances through; Tayla took a trio, duet and solo; Lydia a duet and solo and Maisie a duet.

As well as the Grand Final, the judges ran a number of optional Masterclasses and Challenges. Tayla won the ‘Mark Hindle Ballet Challenge’ and Amelia was one of three rewarded in Mark’s ‘Ballet Masterclass’. The top 10 Grand Final acts were announced on stage (amid lots of celebratory music and pyrotechnics) where they were awarded their trophies.

We’re so thrilled to let you know that, along with her dance partner, Lydia K was awarded 10th place for her lyrical duet, and that ‘Tranquillity’ (one of the ballet group dances) was awarded 9th. Lydia K was then awarded second place for her tap solo and the team were crowned first place champions for their ‘Golden Buzzer’ ballet group dance, ‘Ring O Roses’! This is such a huge achievement based on the 2000+ original regional entries and the incredibly high standard of dancing throughout.

On top of that, Hilton Hall was named the top dance school in the UK and Ireland and ‘Team England’ was crowned top country!

The MGGS/HHDA Grand Final winning team consisted of: Tayla H (13S1), Lydia K (11G), Emily L (10N), Tanzie H (10N), Amelia H (9C), Brogan W (9A) and Maisie C (8N).

Huge congratulations from everyone at MGGS and… keep dancing!
