Upper School Production – Tickets for The Crucible

$

Tickets are still available for The Crucible. It is the year 1692 and all is not well in this strict Puritan community. Witchcraft is suspected…

Based on real events, Miller’s classic brings to life the famous Salem Witch Trials where a group of teenage girls start to accuse men and women of witchcraft. The efforts of the court to find out the truth are swayed by the hysteria that the girls create in the courtroom. The judge chooses to believe the girls’ stories, to save the reputation of the court, and this leads to tragic consequences. The Crucible is the GCSE Drama set text so it does deal with some dark themes/subject content; therefore, we would recommend that this show is suitable for students in Year 10 or above.

The production will be performed by students from Years 10 to 12 and will take place on Wednesday, 12th February and Thursday, 13th February 2020 in the Main School Hall, starting at 7pm. The PFA will also kindly be selling refreshments on both evenings. Those students involved have been working extremely hard and hope that you will be able to join them on one of the evenings.

A letter about tickets was sent out via ParentMail a couple of weeks ago. Tickets are £6 per adult and £4 for concessions. As we are staging the piece in the round, seating is limited and we will not be selling tickets ‘on the door’. Tickets are on sale until Wednesday, 5th February so order your tickets today!

On Tuesday 4th February we entered a Kent schools basketball tournament at Medway Park. MGGS U15s came 3rd in the group stages with some impressive wins including 12-0 v Rainham School and an 8-5 thriller v The North School. We then progressed to the plate competition and overall came 3rd in that. An exhausting afternoon of hard work for the girls but they put in a solid performance being as we don’t offer basketball on the PE curriculum. Well done to all players!

On Thursday 28th February the U16 and U14 development and elite badminton teams competed in the Kent Schools finals. The girls played their socks off and produced some amazing results. They played in a number of matches against a number of different schools throughout the morning. The U16 and U14 elite teams finished in third and received bronze medals. The U16 development team made it through to the finals, losing only 3 matches throughout the qualifying rounds, and finished in second place, receiving silver medals. Overall it was a very successful day!

‘A Step in Time’ Update

MGGS_DTO__Step_in_Time

We have kicked off our fundraising for the extension to our Sports Hall this month with two fun events in school. The first was a staff v students benchball match, resulting in a 3-0 win for the student team! The second was a staff “dance off”; who knew the MGGS staff had such moves?! The two events combined raised over £150 towards our £12,000 in-house target.

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered time or donated via our Virgin Money Giving page. We are really grateful for anything that you can give to help us. The MGGS Development Trust aims to raise a grand total of £140,000 towards the Sports Hall project which will provide our students with a desperately needed dance studio and changing and showering facilities, alongside a WWII visitor centre with a replica WWII classroom to coincide with the reopening of the 2nd set of air-raid tunnels at the front of the school.

If you are able to donate time to the campaign, or have any fundraising suggestions, please contact Mrs Lila Brewer via dto@mggs.org. You can also donate directly to the campaign via the following link:

We are delighted to announce that we will be launching our free coding and digital making club at Maidstone Grammar School for Girls on Saturday, 21st March from 1pm until 4 pm. We are currently looking for young people to attend and we need you!

What is CoderDojo?
CoderDojo is a global, open-source, volunteer-led movement that organises free, not-for-profit coding clubs (Dojos) for young people aged 7–17 years. At a Dojo, young people learn to program and develop websites, apps, programs and games, they build things with code and electronics, and much more. Members also meet like-minded people, show off what they’ve been working on, and take part in national and international events, such as our Coolest Projects showcase (coolestprojects.org). CoderDojo makes learning to code a fun, sociable, and creative experience.

You can find out more at coderdojo.com.
Attending is free of charge; however, it is necessary to sign up in order to guarantee your child a place. Visit our Dojo web page and register your interest by clicking the ‘Join’ button:
https://zen.coderdojo.com/dojos/gb/maidstone/maidstone-mggs.

Once there, you will also be able to reserve a space for upcoming Dojo sessions.

What should I bring to the event?
Often, Dojos require that participants bring a laptop, but we are pleased to be able to provide equipment. If your child would like to bring their laptop, they are very welcome, but please be aware that some activities may require installation of software. Other activities may not require a laptop at all.

Am I, the parent/carer required to attend?
Yes, children must be accompanied by a parent/guardian, who is required to remain on the premises for the duration of the session. You will be asked to help your child(ren) get set up and ready, though after this, our volunteer mentors will assist your children in their learning.

Should my child or I have prior coding knowledge?
No, the Dojo is open to complete beginners as well as to young people who have coded before. We have skilled mentors who will help with technical questions.

Please note that we have a limited number of spaces, so remember to sign your child up in advance for each session.

We look forward to welcoming you both to our Dojo!

Author, Jennifer Godfrey, visits MGGS to talk about Suffragettes in Kent

We were delighted to welcome Jenny to the school on Tuesday to speak to a group of students about her research into the suffragette movement in Kent.
Jenny spent two years researching this fascinating subject; painstakingly going through pamphlets and documents to trace the tours and record some new information about Ethel Baldock, who was born in Maidstone. Ethel was a young working class Kent maid, involved in the suffrage movement, who was arrested and imprisoned for breaking glass during the 1912 window-smashing militant action.
Jenny spoke passionately and brought to life many thought-provoking stories of the women who fought for the vote.

Jenny has given us two copies of her book, Suffragettes of Kent, which can be borrowed from the Library and enjoyed.

Upper School Production of The Crucible

MGGS was transported back to 1692 on Wednesday February 12th and Thursday February 13th as a cast and crew of 30 students bought Arthur Miller’s atmospheric classic to life. The Crucible is tense and intense; the students worked extremely hard to convey this and did a fantastic job. You could have heard a pin drop in the audience! There were some truly outstanding performances, and we are extremely proud of everyone involved!

The reviews are in:

“This was a mesmerising performance – hard-hitting and ambitious, which really allowed the cast to showcase their extraordinary talents. How is it that MGGS has so many talented young actors? The costume, set design, music and lighting were brilliant and effective in transporting the audience back to the febrile atmosphere of Salem in 1692… the hard work and enthusiasm put in to make this so polished a performance was evident from start to finish. At times, hard to watch without emotion, but absolutely cracking!”

“I just wanted to congratulate you, your team and the cast on a superb production of The Crucible on Wednesday evening. I found it wholly atmospheric and absorbing… and wonderfully acted by the students. All very impressive and a credit to the school! “

“That really was astonishingly good! Absolutely gripping; we were all spellbound…”

MGGS_Oxford_Computing_Challenge_SuccessDuring Term 2 all of MGGS KS3 students, and our Computing GCSE and A-Level students, took part in the annual Oxford University Computing Challenge. Our students did amazingly well and a good number of them placed in the top 10% in the country and are through to the second round. This means that these students need to complete a further challenge under examination conditions next week. If they place in this event they will be invited to Oxford University for the grand final.
