Huge congratulations goes to all the students who took part in the U16 Maidstone District Schools Netball Tournament. Both teams played some outstanding netball, winning all their games convincingly, beating the likes of Invicta, St Simon Stock and Maplesden Noakes. The MGGS A team wrapped up their winning streak by beating Invicta 10-1; making them district champions for five years running!

Well done to all students that took part.

MGGS_Trip_To_Nepal_2020

Our recent visit to our partner school in Nepal has provided further evidence of the positive impact our fundraising is having on the lives of people in Tang Ting. The Nepalese government pays for the wages of the teachers and on top of this provides an additional £400 a year for all other expenses (teaching and learning materials, building maintenance, etc). Through the Pahar Trust, MGGS has donated half of all RAG week money (approximately £2,000) a year since 2004. This money has enabled the school to create a Science laboratory (including microscopes and a telescope, a library with books in Nepalese and English), a computer room with a TV and several laptops and sports equipment such as volleyballs, footballs and basketballs.

Over the past few years, the school has seen a steady increase in examination results and this year achieved the best results in the School’s history, and the best overall results in their district. There were two students who had results good enough to qualify for the government bursary to attend university, which is the first time a student from the school has achieved this. MGGS students who visited the school were visibly moved by the clear impact our fundraising has had on the lives of others.

All the people of Tang Ting have asked us to pass on their immense gratitude to the MGGS Community.

This is a fantastic opportunity for students and their families to meet real engineers from across the industry at a free, family-friendly, interactive exhibition on Saturday 21st March 2020. The exhibition will be at the Brunel Museum in London (SE16 4LF) and will run from 11am until 4.30pm.

There will be 20 volunteers from across the industry forming 7 teams, each of whom has created an interactive exhibit to showcase what they do. They are also more than happy to talk to the students about engineering, and what it really means to be ‘an engineer’, showcasing the breadth of the industry and challenging outdated stereotypes around engineering as a career path.

Over February half term Emma K in Year 9 participated in two badminton competitions. On Thursday, 20th March, Emma played in the U15 Hampshire tournament. Emma played extremely well, beating many players of a higher ranking. Emma and her partner progressed through the competition to the final of the girls’ doubles. They unfortunately lost a fantastic match 23 -21.

On Saturday, 22nd March, Emma also played in the U15 Sussex tournament. Emma continued her winning streak, progressing to the quarter finals of the singles competition before losing. Again, in the girls’ doubles, Emma and her partner played extremely well, this time making the semifinal; another very close match, which could have gone either way, ending 23 -21 again.

Congratulations Emma!

On Friday 28th February 2020 Operating Theatre Live came to MGGS; some of you may have seen this on BBC’s Dragons’ Den. The participating students received an in-depth education into the role of a surgeon and were enthralled!

Students learnt about infection control and the role of the CDC, anaesthetics, how to dose and administer, cannula insertion, body systems, anatomical positions, the skull, brain and strokes, eyes, thorasics, heart, and abdominal cavities, and carried out full dissections of each part of the body.

The whole day was informative and exciting. It provided the students with a certificate of attendance which is recognised by universities and a valid tool for filling out UCAS forms and personal statements.

MGGS STEM Week 2020

MGGS_STEM_Week_Maths_Building_Towers

MGGS enjoyed another fantastic, but busy, STEM Week 2020 – a roaring success!

The week began with the annual inter-house Science quiz and the finalists, Normans and Saxons will now battle it out in the final in three weeks’ time.

On Monday and Tuesday, the Maths Faculty held their annual Maths events for all of Year 8. These involved Year 8 modelling the spread of viral epidemics and look at the exponential spread of diseases that can occur. On Wednesday we saw a very excited Year 7 design and build different structures with marshmallows and spaghetti. The inter-school Maths Feast for Year 10 was held on Friday and we saw many visitors from different schools in the region attend,

On Thursday and Friday, Year 8 visited Howletts Wild Animal Park which included a ‘habitats and adaptations’ educational talk. They were able to research the adaptations of species from different habitats and they made links between their learning in Science and Geography.

On Tuesday and Wednesday lunchtime, we were fortunate to have guest lectures for our students focusing on inspiring careers. Susan Hawkes and Helen Rowe from Berry Engineering presented on their rewarding careers in Civil Engineering, designing, building, and solving problems, and changing people’s lives. On Wednesday lunchtime, Chris Jefferson, spoke to those interested in a career within allied healthcare professions, exploring the range of rewarding professions available in the healthcare sector.

Unfortunately, the Reptile show for Year 10, which had been planned for Thursday, has been postponed until after their examinations.

Our final day on Friday was very exciting; the Operating Theatre Live event saw the hall transformed into a working operating theatre! Our students took on the roles of medics as they anaesthetised resuscitation dummies and carried out dissection on a range of organs; great preparation for those planning to follow careers in medicine (see above feature).

We also welcomed visitors from Staplehurst, Offham, Loose and St Benedict’s Catholic Primary schools on Friday to learn about the Science behind rockets. They viewed some fascinating demonstrations of the chemical explosions involved, made their own hydrogen fuel and built and fired their own rockets.

Friday lunchtime was the Key Stage 3 and 4 Hackathon. Students were provided with a series of clues and had to decrypt coded messages, perform binary calculations, and solve number-based equations to hack into Ms. Jebagnanam’s account. There were winners in each year group – Year 7: Isla J & Saphire H, Year 8: Nadrat A & Lexie B, Year 9: Divyaa N & Sophie B and GCSE group: Snigdha D & Faye S. The code for Hackathon for KS3 and KS4 was designed and developed by Lucy S from Y12

Overall, it was a very enjoyable week and students experienced a range of STEM careers. We are also delighted by the fantastic entries for Mrs Manser’s photography competition. Winning photos will be judged next week and shown in next week’s bulletin.

MGGS_Trip_To_Nepal_2020

Video journal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOvriWoWE0w&feature=youtu.be by Keiti C

What was the experience like?Robin P

A Brief Introduction
It was all very overwhelming. One second I was in Heathrow and the next we were rushing through Delhi Airport to get to our main destination, Nepal. Perhaps I took the travelling experience for granted – the wonderful airplane views at night, the relaxed atmosphere of the long flight, the luxury of a toilet and safe drinking water – because as soon as we got outside Kathmandu Airport, it certainly was a whole other story.

The Experience
As I expected, this experience was life-changing, eye-opening and a once in a lifetime opportunity. The lifestyle of those who lived there, the condition of living and housing, the atmosphere… I thought I was ready for it all… but turns out I wasn’t.

Most of the roads were in bad condition, which meant that they were not proper, stable cement like we have in the UK. The roads were made of rocks and white gravel material. It was very bumpy getting around everywhere; I was surprised I didn’t get a headache or something, and it made me curious as to how strong the people who lived there truly were. I couldn’t see a grimace of surprise or disturbance on their faces – they were used to this, this was how they lived day-to-day. It saddened me really. Some of these people worked extraordinarily hard and were incredibly kind, and this was the “reward” they got from Earth.

That leads me to this next point – it’s extremely easy to take things for granted, to think your life is okay and peaceful and even sometimes feel like you have a horrible life and wish it were better. I’ve definitely been there and I’m sure you have at some point, and a trip like this makes you realise how LUCKY and BLESSED you are to live in this country, with our free health system and many other simple benefits like water and safe roads. Seeing the way people were living in Nepal was the memory that still makes me upset. These people, they have nothing really, that’s the shocking truth. Their water was “clean” to them, but to any country with a good water system, theirs was poor. Their food was absolutely stunning, however. There was never a moment where I worried about whether what I was eating was safe or healthy; I threw myself into their culture and took what was given because I felt the need to respect them, respect their hard work and effort and money and time to feed me, a complete stranger. Because I felt a part of their culture, I enjoyed the food that much more. I wanted to understand the people more, I wanted to learn more about their lifestyle, their struggles.

The scenery was phenomenal. I, being a stereotypical undereducated person, knew that the country had the famous Mt. Everest and the Himalayas, but I didn’t know that the country was so much more than that. From the beautifully designed trucks and buses to the glorious mountain ranges and valleys and rivers; the country was breathtaking.

I felt a part of a new world, taken away and given a new breath of air. It was as if I had been sleeping forever and someone had harshly pulled me into reality. I couldn’t fathom words to describe the atmosphere and setting. Life in the rural areas was calm and slow, like my experience was a video recording that had been slowed down. There was so much to see, so much to hear, so much to smell and touch. Every travellers dream I suppose; exploring somewhere different, somewhere interesting. Yet it wasn’t as relaxed as a holiday and it wasn’t so much of an expedition either in a sense. It was a wonderfully crafted trip that allowed you to rethink your morals and values as a young person.

What I valued most from the trip was the visit to the partner school. I could see in real life what a couple of pounds from each person in school for a humorous occasion (RAG Week) could do, to change the lives of children, students just like us. I felt so lucky as a person to know I had contributed to the better education offered because of the money we had given to the school. I was thrilled to see that we had given them so much, from textbooks to furniture to computers, practically everything they needed to function, which brought me to tears. How simple it was to give £1 for something, yet not knowing the effect; the trip made that wondrous consideration worthwhile.

It’s easy to roll your eyes at the charity adverts on the TV about the conditions that children and families face in Africa and other similarly poor places. We’ve become partially immune to them because they appear so often and not many people are convinced to give the money, maybe because they can’t see what their money would actually do. It’s very easy to display images on a screen and claim the money does this and that, but in actually going to the school in Tang Ting, I realised we are, again, so incredibly lucky to have stability and the lifestyle we have. These children depend on us so much and I’d hate to think that people wouldn’t know what their money for RAG week had gone to.

In conclusion, the trip made me realise that I need to be more understanding of others’ lives and situations. You never know what’s going on in someone’s life or world until you’re actually there, until you are open, until you’ve got a clear view of what’s really going on.

Amelia S
The 10 days in Nepal have, simply, been an unforgettable experience! As someone who had never flown or travelled before, I was very nervous about the trip but now I know these nerves weren’t necessary. Each day was unique and special in its own way, but, for me, one of the best days was when I had the opportunity to teach English to students at our partner school (as well as playing endless rounds of ‘duck, duck, goose’!). Another highlight was our two mountain hikes, because not only were the views utterly breathtaking, but it also gave us the chance to really support each other as a group. From Kathmandu to Pokhara, to Ghachok, back to Pokhara, to Tang Ting, back to Pokhara again and then returning to Kathmandu, every single moment will stay with me forever. I am so grateful for this experience and I already want to return to Pokhara to buy more harem trousers!

Head Students 2020-2021 Elected at MGGS

We are delighted to announce, following an extensive selection process that included a school voice vote, that the following students have been appointed as the team of Head Students for 2020-21: Annie G, Krystal, A, Molly K, Taniya R & Emma W.

Congratulations to them all! These are the first appointments for our new Senior Student Leadership Team, with further leadership roles, including House Leaders and Subject Prefects, to be announced in the coming months.

Maidstone Grammar School for Girls is proud to have a long history of Student Leadership in the Sixth Form. Each year all Year 12 students are given the opportunity to stand for one of the positions within the Senior Student Leadership Team, as Head Student, House Leader, Subject Prefect or Student Rep. The highly valued status of these roles is reflected in the multi-stage appointment process, but each year, the Leadership and Sixth Form Management Team are impressed by the quality of applications and the mature and committed way students approach each stage. Once appointed to these roles, students serve their fellow students and the school for a year, putting into action our motto, non sibi sed omnibus, “not for oneself but for all”. Each role encompasses different responsibilities, but together they provide vital support for the MGGS community while acting as outstanding ambassadors for the School and role models for their peers. We are extremely proud of our Student Leaders and the hard work that they do.

The MGGS Head Students play a central role in the Sixth Form Student Leadership Team and in the School. The Head Students lead many significant school events and participate in most external functions. The role of Head Student is a prestigious one, and those appointed have demonstrated that they fully committed to the role, representing and serving the school. Head Students are excellent role models who will relish the opportunity to work with all members of the school community, including students from all years, staff, governors, parents and carers, external agencies and visitors. In addition, the Head Students coordinate the work of the other Student Leaders.
There is no single mould for a good Head Student, and the final team of five is comprised of students with complementary interests and skills. Below, each introduces themselves and explains what they are looking forward to during their year of service.

Krystal A
“I am very proud to have been selected as a Head Student at MGGS. As an external student who moved here from London, MGGS has made me feel very welcome, and so I felt as though being Head Student would be the best way to give back to the school. I am studying A level Biology, Chemistry and Physics, but when I’m not working or revising, I like to spend my time either watching anime or playing games. I am so excited to be a Head Student and I am looking forward to representing the school.”

Annie G
“I am honoured to be able to say that I have been selected to be part of the Head Student team for 2020-2021! My friends would describe me as hard-working and approachable, and these are qualities that I hope to bring to the role. Organising RAG week is an event that I am really looking forward to, as I have just returned from the Nepal trip; I am excited to work hard to raise money for our sister school. I have really enjoyed my past years at MGGS, and can’t wait to work with students and teachers as part of the Leadership Team that I have always looked up to. There is no more rewarding way to spend my last year at MGGS, and I hope I can help ensure that everyone has a great time and a memorable year!”

Molly K
“I am honoured to have been selected as one of MGGS’s next Head Students. For anyone who knows me, I have a passion for Art Graphics and horse riding. I study Art Graphics as one of my A levels, as well as Geography and Psychology; this mixture is challenging but I enjoy doing them equally. I regularly volunteer for the School helping out where I can to help the School run smoothly, including parents evenings and open mornings. I consider myself to be caring, friendly and a lot of fun to be around. My friends would describe me as compassionate and organised, always doing everything I can to make everyone around me happy and enjoying school. I have thoroughly enjoyed my last six years at MGGS and want to make my last year incredible; I am very lucky to have this opportunity to be a part of something memorable to finish my MGGS journey.”

Taniya R
“I am delighted to be honoured with the role of being Head Student for this academic year and I am excited for all the opportunities this role gives me to not only demonstrate my skills but to also develop new ones. I currently study Biology, Chemistry and Psychology and I also mentor students in the lower years. I would say I am a confident, approachable and organised person who is willing to offer any support to anyone who needs it. Through this role, I hope to be a part of what makes your time at MGGS a memorable one.”

Emma W
“I am so thrilled to be one of the next Head Students at MGGS. After recently visiting our partnered school in Nepal it has really opened my eyes as to how lucky we are; the trip was truly unforgettable. The visit to Nepal has made the opportunity to organise RAG week even more meaningful to me – having seen first hand the impact our money makes, I have realised the importance of the week. I’m looking forward to carrying out every task to the best of my ability as well as being a friendly and supportive face for all students to approach whenever they need to.”
